ABOUT ME

"If the eyes are the windows to the soul, the voice is its song."

-Kristen Callihan

My passion and purpose is the voice, and I find joy in helping others heal, release, and expand their voice and speaking potential. I have over 15 years of experience collaborating with various speakers and voice users, including singers, actors, voice over artists, news anchors, public speakers, CEOs, radio hosts, and more. I apply evidence-based practices combined with holistic principles to create individualized experiences for each of my clients. My personal experience as a singer with a voice injury provides me with empathy and drive to rehabilitate others’ voices and affirm their identities, and to train future speech-language pathologists to develop their clinical identities.

I am an ASHA-certified and New York State licensed speech-language pathologist (CCC-SLP) and a Recognized Vocologist by the Pan American Vocology Association (PAVA-RV). As a dual alumna of New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, I earned a Master of Science from the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders and a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions. I am certified and trained in LSVT, videostroboscopy, PhoRTE, and PROMPT and am a member of ASHA, The Voice Foundation, VASTA, PAVA, WPATH, and the New York Voice Study Group.

I currently hold a full-time position as Clinical Associate Professor in NYU Steinhardt's Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders, where I provide clinical education to graduate student clinicians through teaching in the clinical practicum sequence and training in the NYU Speech Language Hearing Clinic. I previously held a part-time position as a Clinical Voice Specialist at NYU Langone Health's Rusk Rehabilitation and have served as a per diem voice therapist at NYU Langone Health's Rusk Rehabilitation and Voice Center.

I've recently launched a podcast called On The Voice aimed to destigmatize vocal injury in our industry. My co-host is Mackenzie Bykowski, a NYC based voice teacher who specializes in working with singers recovering from vocal injury and an Associate Teacher of Mike Ruckles. We have both experienced voice injuries that have shaped our journeys as signers/performers and have influenced how we approach our work with the voices we care for. We are trying to create a community centered in empathy, belonging, and resilience to provide folks experiencing voice injury with a bit of hope- bolstered with education- as they move through their own journeys. You are welcome to learn more about us through our website, our Instagram, and listen to our episodes either on Spotify or Apple Podcasts
